Arent most of these leaders the offsprings of europeans? They sure look like it. Are they also going to pay reperations then?
I can only hope our EU leaders have the farsight to run as far away as possible from this kinds of declarations, since informal, nebulous declarations can turn into obligations born out of customary international law really quickly if one is not careful.
That‘s what these declarations are for, that‘s the game that’s being played here.
The ICJ repeatedly denied state responsibility for past actions, among other reasons, because of the idea of past actions needing to be judged by the standards of the past.
This seeks to circumvent rational logic and established international law by creating a unilateral promise by the EU or the MS, and then basing their unfounded claims on that. Or, these originally non-binding declarations will be used as foundation for the argument that international customary law has changed, as evidenced by these declarations, and now, there is a basis for these frivolous claims. Either way, it’s a trick, a vile attempt to get our next generation and squeeze them for our wealth.
No one ever does anything for its intrinsic symbolic value alone, it‘s all a calculated game.
And we can only hope the officials we send there do not take the bait and waste our money on unfounded, irrational claims.
This is laughable. As if they are all indigenous and they didn’t treat horribly the indigenous people of their countries after independence.
Also, no Mercosur deal and they’ll be changing their minds.
This is like if the US asked Europe to pay reparations for slavery. Slavery wasn’t banned in brazil until 1888 ffs, they had been independent for quite some time then.
Mexico can pay Mexico for the Aztec slave trade.
Probably a red herring. The real issue seems to be the carbon import tariffs.
HAHAHAHA once again people from latam forgetting they’re majority white European 💀 I’m European Spanish and it’s always the pastiest white Argentinians that start bitching about Spanish colonialism. I knew a girl who would non stop joke about Spanish imperialism and send memes about how evil Spain was when her ancestors were probably out doing the colonialising themselves 😂
Let me see if I have this right:
* Wanted to remove any mention of Ukraine from the communique.
* Wanted reparations for the trans-Atlantic slave trade.
* Wanted to remove all references to fighting corruption from the communique.
* Wanted the EU to drop its environmental demands for a trade deal.
* Keep or expand European Union levels of investments in Latin American infrastructure projects.
The spectacle of people largely descended from wealthy political dynasties cosplaying as oppressed indigenous peoples and Africans is getting the most attention, but the reason for this clown car of a diplomatic summit is because of more substantive issues like corruption and environmental regulations.
Mercosur has plenty of slimy political interests that are keen on Latin America becoming a gateway to the EU market for any sort of industry that pollutes far too much to ever be able to operate directly in the EU. They’re especially keen on getting the EU to pay for the infrastructure to support the creation of these highly polluting industries.
Corruption in Latin America is rampant, to the point where the closest thing to law and order in many countries is rival factions competing against each other to plunder the country for themselves.
