Contrary to the article yesterday, the US withheld support for Ben Wallace as NATO chief more than 2 weeks ago.

I wanted to post this article because the Telegraph article posted yesterday received a lot of attention and spurred a lot of passionate and heated debate.

Well, the very same newspaper (tabloid), the Telegraph, wrote an article on June 22 saying the US was withholding support for Ben Wallace because it decided to go with France and Germany in supporting a NATO chief from an EU country.

That telegraph article from yesterday saying it was because of the F-16 training comments is complete lies and clickbait.

  1. The popular Telegraph article posted yesterday saying the US withheld support for Wallace as the next NATO chief because of his offer to train Ukrainians on F-16s is purely clickbait and a lie.

The Telegraph wrote this linked article more than 2 weeks ago saying the US withheld support for Wallace because France and Germany want the next NATO chief to be from an EU country and it seems that the US is taking that stance as well.

It would seem that the US isn’t supporting Wallace not because he’s a bad candidate, but that the US wants to make its EU partners happy. Who knows, maybe Biden thinks Wallace is a good candidate but it’s more important to ensure the EU countries feel like they have more significant involvement in NATO leadership.

Either way, there was a lot of name-calling and heated comments in yesterdays thread because everyone thought it was about the US being petty about the F-16s training and it clearly was not. People got upset about that for no reason other than the Telegraph rage baiting readers.

  2. Or all of the above…

The discussion around this is pointless. Ben Wallace will not become NATO chief. Stoltenberg will extend his assignment for another year. And after that we will see…

  3. Yeah, this sounds more plausible, for me at least.

I wouldn’t be surprised if we learned some time into the future that the behavior and actions of all the “bigger” nations was coordinated to a certain degree, every country acting in a believable way to keep options open on how to progress through certain stages of this war.

While Wallace would be a really good fit for the position I personally feel better with him at the helm of the UK mod. Getting one of the new members of NATO (Finland and soon Sweden) into this position would be really good. While Sweden is pending the delay of this decision and keeping the current one for a year is maybe a good thing

  4. NATOs going to lose out on a great candidate because of petty politics, whatever their mistake to make but for the love of god don’t double down on this failure by appointing Ursula.

  5. But who the hell got the idea that UvdL would be a good idea for this job?

  6. Lol if they want to play that route the we can just not agree to anyone from a eu country….. cmon that’s ridiculous from the, Jens is from Denmark the next one does not need to be from a EU country hope the Uk goverment blocks all their attempts
