UK’s Empire Cinemas Enters Administration With Closures, Job Losses & Cinema Sales

  1. Cinemas are a thing of the past, they’re too expensive and you never know what kind of crowd will be in the same screen. Gives me social anxiety just thinking about going cinema.

  2. With Cineworld in administration as well it’s not a good time for the UK cinema scene.

Must be said that some of this is down to town/city councils putting cinemas in the most stupid places.

Bury St Edmunds had their big Debenhams close when that company died, the planning application to replace the store includes a cinema, when there’s literally a Cineworld multiplex across the road. Utterly bizarre.

I can only hope that more ‘local run’ cinemas pop up, but with all the major studios tightening their belts it’s probably going to take a good decade for them to truly recover from Covid.

I imagine there’s a strong market right now for a properly policed cinema brand, one that doesn’t tolerate people on their phones, chatting, throwing shit or screaming (unless in a kid specific screening of course). Being able to turn your phone off and enjoy a film on a big screen is probably going to become more and more popular considering how online we are/are becoming.

  3. Oof, my local cinema is an empire. You could tell it was coming, place desperately needed to be redecorated and they just kept putting tape over damage instead of fixing it. It has been almost constantly busy every night the past few months though.

  4. Not surprised at this. Empire are easily the worst of all the mainstream chains.

  5. went to the cinema last week with my daughter – 2 cokes, one popcorn, £19.

    no wonder they are dying.

  6. Empire have been struggling since before COVID, their cinemas are old, need refurbs and more often than not they have one of the big three close by which takes all their business.

  7. Odeon has limitless membership £15 outside of London. Really good value.

  8. Went to see Asteroid City the other day (alas the gf likes Wes Anderson films). Left the cinema £18 poorer (just for the tickets), annoyed, and completely and utterly confused as to what the fuck I just watched.
