Was anyone else taught this song in school, or was it just my sadistic teacher? Mr Fleming had all of us 10 year olds sing this in 4th class.

  1. There are a couple more verses before the last verse:

They took her away and they put her in a jail (etc.)

They put the rope around her neck (etc.)

They pulled the rope and she was hung (etc.)

And in the version I learned, it was the river Saila.

  2. Weile weile waile is an auld children’s song alright. The lyrics are messed up and are actually alot worse then what you have written.

I use to sing it to my kids when they were babies and still do the odd time. The missus hates it, so that keeps me going with it.

Christy Moore has a pretty haunting version of it.

It’s genuinely one of my favourite songs and holds alot of sentiment with me since I had the kiddos.

  3. We were once told that the weila wailas lived under a bridge near where we were staying on holiday 🥺 frightened the shite out of us

  4. Great song! Didn’t learn it in school but personally think it’s a classic. Your teacher wasn’t at all sadistic

  5. Dad sang it to me. Christy Moore does a version too, its very famous

  6. Definitely recognize the chorus and knew the tune immediately, didn’t remember the lyrics.

  7. wtf!

She stabbed the baby in the head with a penknife !? then they took her away and hung her, and you sang that at school ?

Here, I’m from the UK ( Scotland ) and all we ever did at Hymn practice was stuff like Sing Hosana

  8. Such a tune! Dark as hell with a killer melody. *That’s* an Irish lullaby 👶
