> **An Odesa businessman has been apprehended after attempting to bribe an employee of Ukraine’s SBU security service to the staggering tune of EUR 90,000, the SBU reported on Facebook on July 8.**
>
> The suspect, who serves as the director of a local logistics company, allegedly sought to secure the termination of criminal proceedings that were initiated against him by the SBU regarding a corruption scheme involving the export of agricultural products. If convicted, the businessman faced the prospect of having his assets seized.

> “Based on the substantial evidence collected, SBU investigators formally notified the businessman of his suspected involvement in the crime, in accordance with Part 3 of Article 369 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine, which pertains to offering, promising, or providing illegal benefits to a public official,” stated the agency.
>
> The accused now faces a potential prison sentence of up to eight years, along with the confiscation of his assets.
Glad to see they are firmly moving in the right direction.
Good on Ukraine. Rooting out corruption gives ordinary citizens a chance for a better life.
So, the guy gets charged with various kinds of corruption.
Then he goes and commits more corruption.
In addition to the previous charges, can the SBU add **Felony Stupidity** to the list?
The sad thing is that people in Eastern Europe who, after the fall of Soviet Union, had money and power because of corruption, want the Russian system to return. And there’s many, unfortunately…
Imagine being that officer, no amount of money could outweigh my satisfaction of watching that dumbass businessman in the eyes as they dig themselves a hole. Maybe in the time before an officer with a conscience wouldn’t have been able to actually arrest the businessman because he would just bribe a judge. But now they can catch people like that and *know* they’ll get what they deserve.
Hopefully, one result of this war will be a system-wide purge of the corruption culture in Ukraine.
Corruption literally kills, and I hope Ukrainian society is learning a hard lesson of that.
Isn’t the past/current mayor buzzinessman of Odesa pro russia?
Good to read that they didn’t take it. You should take pride in turning down a bribe. Very good.
The only way you can break the back of this type of oligarch corruption is to make examples out of the people you catch.
That includes the oligarchs who offer bribes and the public servants who get caught accepting them.
Otherwise it is just words, that mean nothing.
The consequences need to be dramatic, Otherwise it will just move deeper in to the background and remain as a rot under any society.
Just do it how other people does it in other countries. Go make “campaign contributions” to politicians, judges or organizations. (I’m kidding…. kinda)
Seriously tho fuck all kinda corruptions no matters the countries it happen in.
I would give a bounty to any man who turned in someone who offered to bribe them, to a total of 20% of the price of the proposed bribe or 40,000 USD, whichever is lower. Then make the briber pay that money as a fine in addition to whatever other penalties.
So you get 80% less money but you get it cleanly, legally, and as a way to clean up the culture rather than make it worse.
All of eastern europe needs an iceland style housecleaning of corrupt powerful people
This is an excellent sign for Ukraine. It takes a few successful prosecutions and everyone will take notice — think twice before offering a bribe. The amount is extraordinary,m; so proud of the officer. ❤️🇺🇦
