The core of Wagner were the best equipped, most experienced, most motivated troops in Russia’s ramshackle collective army. Their leaders – compared to such inept clowns like Shoigu, Gerasimov and Muradov – were competent and they didn’t get promoted for disasters like Vuhledar.
The only thing that stopped the orchestra was Prigozhin foolishly left his home base – St Petersburg – completely undefended. Hundreds of millions of rubles and dollars were taken and chances are his family held hostage. It’s likely Prigozhin has gone back to St Petersburg – lured back by the promise of having the money returned to him to pay for the wages of Wagner. It’s likely he is either dead or soon will be dead and so are supporters like General Surovikin. If so, what will be coming up sometime is a purge of the leaders of Wagner. I expect a Russian version of the night of the long knives.
