They’ll wait till after New Year for a full lockdown. They’re “being nice” by allowing us a Christmas this year… don’t forget to say thank you to our overlords.
Bojo hasn’t got the balls to try it unless lots of people are asking for it. If he had, it would have already been done as soon as omicron started. 2 week lockdown and back to a normal Christmas.
I half think they might make a sudden announcement between xmas and new year. Like on the 29th, 30th onward is lockdown. To stop New year parties which will be major spreading events.
If they announce something before New year’s to come after it, then it will be totally counter productive because all the idiots will rush out on NYE for a last party before lockdown. Remember what it was like last time with packed pubs and train stations etc.
But most likely is they take the easy way out until hospital numbers/deaths start peaking in early Jan before doing anything.
Chris Whitty hopes so, but Boris doesn’t want the impact on voter ratings. It’ll be announced on the 26th and come into force 27th or 28th.
Find out on the next heart racing episode of Dragon Ball Z!
Case rates have been rising, but hospitalisation rates are currently 10% lower than they were at some points in July & August. (Last week it was 900, the first week of August it was over 1000), we’re now well over 2 weeks into Omicron. Depends on how it pans out of course, but data from S. Africa seems promising, where case rates are already falling and their restrictions are lower than ours despite having less healthcare resources.
No.
Whether it’s the right thing to do or not he doesn’t have the political strength to do it.
A good chunk of his MPs would vote against it. Easily enough to trigger a vote of no confidence if they’re pissed off enough.
It’s worse within his cabinet. Delaying restrictions is a win-win for the his challengers. If there’s no surge in hospitalisation they get to claim the credit for blocking restrictions, if there is then it’s all Boris’ fault and they can take over with a clean sheet.
What we’re watching is the start of the Conservative party leadership contest. The health of the nation, the hospitality sector, the NHS are all just collateral damage.
The media are really milking the Christmas lockdown stuff.
Its pretty obvious from yesterday that any notable increase in restrictions is going to be dropped after boxing day at the earliest.
If you’re going for clicks then at least switch the narrative to new year because everyone and their dog now know that Christmas is “on”.
no, and even if he tries, very few people will take notice at this point.
Denmark is running at a case rate of 0.5% so far we are similar and with boosters and behavioural changes I don’t think we will see a significant rise in patients needing treatment.
I’m still waiting for the massive rise in hospitalisations. I’m not saying it won’t come, but it hasn’t come yet and we are past the two weeks we were told to wait.
Last night on the BBC they had a cambridge virologist who said it could be two OR THREE weeks to see the hospitalisations because we just need to wait for omicron to “work its way through the population.”
No public figure wants to even speculate that omicron might not live up to the hype.
Honest question – when is it that we should be seeing large rises in hospitalisation and death? Because those numbers still seem relatively low, and it feels like it’s been a while since the infection numbers have been higher. Also – if the numbers stay like this relatively, wouldn’t it actually be better if we’ll all got it now to speed along natural immunity?
I’m feeling pretty desperate – please, no more lockdowns…
The amount of cases doesn’t make a blind bit of difference to anything, it’s just a convenient way for the media to create a fear-inducing headline, as per. If you tested people on the scale they are doing now at this time of year at any time in history the story would be the same, a sharp uptick in seasonal virus infections, absolutely normal. The amount of hospitalisations is negligible; 129 as of the 18th. 129 people out of nearly 70 million. 14 deaths. More people die from cancer every hour.
It really needn’t be discussed at all at this point, never mind considering restrictions and lockdowns. The ‘Covid pandemic’ is long since over.
Right now this is making Johnson appear very weak
By imposing restrictions he will piss off enough tory MPs to challenge his leadership, even though restrictions can be instated with labour’s support.
But even with restrictions in place there will be the growing narrative in the uk of “why should I stay at home when the government get away with breaking the rules”.
This very conversation, which will be happening across every town and city in the country, will undermine the rules in place, the government, and this will be as a result of Johnsons poor leadership and hypocrisy.
However by NOT acting, and not committing to any restrictions he’s creating uncertainty, business leaders, science experts, reasonable politicians and concerned citizens will lose confidence in the government as he is unable to commit to further restrictions despite a dramatic increase in cases and risk.
If he chooses to not instate restrictions, he will appear apathetic of those at risk and those who have died, but if he imposes restrictions he will piss off his own party and damage his precious economy. But by not committing to either choice and flailing around in the middle he is looking indecisive which is very damaging for his leadership.
Either way here, Johnson is backed in to a corner and completely fucked
How many times are variations of this article going to be posted? Jesus Christ.
How about old people, the vulnerable and overweight and those who live with them lockdown, and everyone else for whom the virus is little more than a cold carries on with their lives?
If you’re elderly or at risk and catching covid these days (or really any days other than those first few months last year) then either you live with someone who’s being careless or you’re being careless yourself.
I would classify going to bars and restaurants, seeing friends, not wearing your mask in public, not washing your hands every time you go shopping, not keeping your distance from people etc as careless if you’re at risk or live with at risk people. And it’s those people who the rest of us for whom this has no effect sacrificed so much for over the last 2 years.
The problem is of course it’s impossible to enact one set of rules for one group of people and one for the other as one group will get jealous of the others freedoms, flaunt the rules and get themselves sick….. but it ends up meaning alot of the rest of us get locked down and have sacrificed years of our prime for absolutely nothing.
I live in london, I managed to not catch covid at all last year because I obeyed the rules, I’ve caught it multiple times this year since lockdown ended because I’ve been going out to bars, gigs, clubs and seeing friends….and I’ve been going out to them because I live alone, dont live with any elderly or at risk people, dont work with them…and I know the chance of me being hospitalized from getting the virus at my age and with my lack of pre existing conditions is less than the chance of me being hit by a car crossing the road to buy groceries. Each time ive had it it’s just been a mild cold- like most people. And I wear my mask at all times on public transport and in shops.
Those for whom it could be more should be locking down, not the rest of us.
Even if there was, no one would listen. The tories have lost any credibility they may have had. If the tories don’t have to follow their own rules, why the hell should we? Lead by example and all that.
Cases are rising but not hospitalisation and deaths (we had like 44 yesterday). Most of my friends are having or had Covid past couple of weeks and it just an inconvenience nothing major. Feels like covid has mutated to transmit itself easily but lost its potency.
Boris won’t bring another lockdown though – most people are against it with millions boosted and his party vultures are circling over his head.
From what I’ve read and what’s coming out of South Africa Omicron is alot less severe even though it spreads more, south Africa have already peaked and now their hospltitalisation rates are plunging. Quite frankly it feels like the only reason the government are flirting with the idea of another lockdown is because then we will all be talking about that and not the bloody Christmas party.
I work in a hospital and our Itu cases are going down day by day.. So I’m guessing no
What ever boris says believe the opposite , it’s worked for me
Before Christmas? No.
After Christmas? Most likely.
Depends if the party donors want one or not. Johnson has customers to think about.
I never read a news article where the headline has a question mark at the end.
No. It’s now too late. It’s basically Christmas now. And even if they did, people aren’t going to lock themselves up. They’ll just what they were going to in regards to seeing people.
If there is I’m not listening. I’ll abide by lockdown rules when the people in charge do.
It works out to something like 6 covid patients per hospital. If that’s enough to make the NHS collapse then the NHS (and its lack of funding) is the real issue here, surely?
