Hello good people!

In a few months I’ll be buying a car. Can’t wait! But now it’s getting close I’m starting to think about the practical side and I hope someone here can help me with that.

1. What do you actually need to receive from the seller when you buy a car? I assume just some keys aren’t enough😝
Should I get a registration certificate and some sort of code to actually transfer ownership like you’d get in the EU?

https://www.vegvesen.no/en/vehicles/buy-and-sell/notification-of-sale-and-transfer-of-registration/
I’ve found this page for example and it all makes sense but I’m looking for a page that details what I should expect from the seller and what I should do myself. I simply don’t know the procedure of buying and selling cars in Norway. I don’t want to forget anything or risk buying a stolen car.

2. What do I need to keep in the car when I’m driving it?
I know you need to have a high-visibility vest and a warning triangle. But what about the rest? Is having insurance enough or do you need a plastic card that proves it? What about registration information? Can the police look that up themselves or do you also need to carry some kind of official document with you at all times when you’re in the car?

3. What about toll roads?
Just get an AutoPASS and I’ll be fine?

4. Is it normal to have a third party check out the car during a test drive or should I inform the seller or anything? I mean a normal pre-buying check, like paying a professional to get it up on a bridge and just check it out for a little while. I’m asking because everyone who I know who’s bought a car here (all Norwegians) didn’t bother with one which I find very weird.

5. Is there a minimum warranty or conformity principle guaranteed by law when buying from a company?
For example, what if I buy an 8 year old 200.000 NOK car and the seller states it drives and was maintained well, what is the default warranty I will have? Are there lists or anything or is this lawyer territory?
(Don’t worry, I’ll avoid the scammers with “outlet” in their ads whatever the law says.)

6. Does anyone maybe have a link to a page that details the difference in expectations you can have of a car when buying from a private person versus buying from a company?

7. On Finn people have to state whether there is an outstanding loan on the car they’re selling. Why is that and what should I check if there is? I mean, aren’t loans always personal and therefor non-transferable by simply selling goods?

8. I’ve heard people who don’t own an EV say you can insure the HV battery and motors of an EV. Anyone know if that’s true? That could put more EVs in my price range.

I think that’s about it. If you think I’ve forgotten anything I’d love to hear it.

Thank you very much for your time and I hope you have a wonderful weekend!

K.
