Hello, I have a few question about the French driver’s license number. I hope someone can help me. Thank you!

1. when people say driver’s license number do they mean the NEPH or the [other number on the license](https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:French_driving_license_2013.png) (line 5, 13AA00001)? I think I understand what NEPH is, but then why is there this other number which looks like the driver’s license numbers I am used to see in other countries. Why have 2 numbers?
2. Digits 5 and 6 of the NEPH is registration department – is it the same as prefecture? If not, is there a list of codes somewhere online?
3. Digits 7 and 9 of the NEPH are prefecture and sub-prefecture codes – Wikipedia has the [prefecture codes](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_subprefectures_of_France). Does someone know how I can get sub-prefecture codes?

  1. The NEPH number is only for administration purposes, such as asking for a new license or a new driving category. The driver’s license is indeed written on it.
