Malta is a tiny island in the scorching Mediterrean and, this week, the Earth has been [the hottest it’s ever been in 125,000 years](https://www.washingtonpost.com/climate-environment/2023/07/05/hottest-day-ever-recorded/). Under these circumstances, one would expect that we Maltese would naturally and gladly participate in the most ancient tradition of the siesta which sanctifies the wider geographical space of our location. And yet, we persist in our ways as though it were bloody January.

Is there a reason why the private sector does not adopt half days in summer? Luckily the government does, but are private companies not also operating on the same furnace island? I am aware that air conditioners exist, however it’s not exactly healthy to stay under one for a whole day every work day. Taking breaks by going outside feels like you’ve instantly walked from one continent into another (i.e. not that great for my sinus either). Plus the lethargy, the road rage, the tarmac I can visibly see thawing with my naked eye…I could go on.

tldr; would it kill us to slow down? shouldn’t we be at home sipping iced kinnies at 3pm on a random Tuesday in July?

  1. We are slaves to business and the wage, the bottom line is all they really care about. Even when the HR departments pretend otherwise.
