To put in perspective the scale of the defenses. Ukraine is about 30,000 square miles smaller than Texas. If the Russians are following standard doctrine (which is a big if) they will be placing 5 land mines per square meter. That mean that eight hundred fifty thousand (850 000) land mines have been placed. Keep in mind that this is a mathmatical example to give a sense of scale. The real thing could be far higher and lower. They will also not spread the mines out evenly across the entire area but concentrate them in certain areas.
And some people are bitching about UA getting cluster munitions! Fuck at this point I wouldn’t have a problem if UA started dropping VX gas on Russian positions
…and people are making a big fuss about a few stupid stray artillery bomblets – when measuring risk…which is bigger.
Does anyone have a conversion to units of Wales or giraffes?
There was a article a few years ago about some kind of tech that could find certain types of mines from the air. Something about the metal being warmer than the ground around it in the evening. The tech was developed to help find mines in nations that are still finding them. I’m sure some of our reddit sleuths could find it again and pass that forward to Ukraine so they can backyard engineer something
That’s why in part the US have provided Cluster munitions they can clear minefields and any duds will be sitting in an already sown minefield that needs to be cleaned up after the war anyway.
People complain about US Cluster Munitions with a low dud rate being supplied to Ukraine.
The fact is Putin / Russia have mined Ukrainian Territory the size of Florida and they have been using cluster bombs against Ukraine civilians.
A double standard being applied to Ukraine!
An equal playing field, thats all Ukraine wants! Let Ukraine have a fair fight against evil!
