This is major for the Netherlands. He’s been prime minister of the Netherlands for 12 years, pushing neo-liberal policies. There’s no clear successor within his party, and the right wing pro-farmer party BBB is projected to win big with the next early elections.
On the other hand, a lot of people used their vote for BBB as a protest against the status quo, AKA the 12 year reign of Rutte. They might lose some of their votes as well. It’ll be interesting to see the results later this year.

I always find it suspicious when a politician does something like this. Can’t help but think they are being constrained somehow.
