As far as I am aware, the Anglican church in the UK would be pretty accepting of blessings and marriages. The issue is that worldwide, there are a lot of extremely homophobic Anglicans, particularly in Africa. A formal acceptance of equal marriage could result in a schism. People want to avoid that not just because it would make the church smaller and weaker, but also because the hope is that continued unity will allow progressive values to spread from the ‘centre’ outwards.
People wanting the blessing of a religion that has historically discriminated against people like them is fascinating to me.
