  1. Rejecting the NATO accession in exchange for immediate peace would be considered a humiliating defeat.

Tens of thousands of Ukrainians died for their homeland. There is no different path. Getting into the NATO and EU is a must. Non-negotiable at this point. Russia is weak and Ukraine must use this window of opportunity.

  2. Even if that peace was immediate, it would be short lasting. NATO is the only guarantee for a peaceful future.

  3. Step 1: Promise to not join NATO in exchange for Russia withdrawing from Ukrainian territory and ending its war on Ukraine.

Step 2: After Russia withdraws and ends it war in Ukraine, join NATO.

What’s the issue here? Are people expected to “keep their word” given to a lying sociopath like Vladimir Putin? Tell the bastard what he needs to hear and then stab him in the back. After all, it’s what he would do.

  4. The decision of whether or not to join NATO (or another security pact) is the choice of that nation. Not it’s neighbours.

    Ergodan’s obstructionism aside….

  5. i’d like to see the gender breakdown of this

easy to say that you want to keep fighting when you’re not at risk of being drafted

  6. Poll: Most Ukrainians not ready to refuse NATO accession in exchange for ***TEMPORARY*** peace

    Here, I fixed the title

  7. Would Ukrainians take NATO in exchange for the current land that that they have lost?

  8. Without NATO backing, Ukraine would need nuclear weapons of their own to guarantee peace.

  9. As a Ukrainian I want to share a little of my perspective (and the perspective of many of my country). I am honestly not 100% versed in the whole geopolitics of NATO so i’m not really looking to take one side 100% or argue, just sharing my thoughts.

I think many Ukrainians are reluctant to abandon the possibility of NATO for three reasons. The first two are more obvious. First off, we have real reasons to want protection from Russia. Second, we can’t trust Russia so who knows if they’ll honor this agreement. They have broken many agreements with us.

But the third reason is that this would be letting Russia decide our decisions we should make for ourselves. If we applied to NATO and got rejected for some other reasons, that’s a different situation. But why the hell should the country that colonized us, suppressed our language and culture, killed many Ukrainians in the past and even today is killing many of our brothers, sisters, friends, etc, be able to tell us what to do? Giving big countries the ability to tell small countries what they can and can’t do is very dangerous, and in the context of Russia and Ukraine it hits a very deep wound to allow Russia to tell us what we can and can not do.

And before someone replies “what about when the US did _____!!!!,” two wrongs don’t make a right.

  10. Nor should they. That would not only be an evil choice to force upon Ukraine, it would be a stupid one for NATO, as it would essentially guarantee future conflict with Russia.

The pathway to peace is victory for Ukraine and the integrity of the Ukrainian nation.

  11. is it a peace like the one russia promised if ukraine gave away the soviet nukes?

  12. That would just show Russia that bullying works, and then later on they will come back and ask for something else.

  13. How drunk you have to be to vote for this peace? That would probably be an alcohol poisoning death sentence.

  14. Surely Russia will follow the rules this time 😂 right guys?

  15. “You are forbiden to join cool kids club, although technically you should be allowed to try” wouldn’t fly well with me either.

I remember, how in the 90s there were talks, that former communist countries shouldn’t be allowed to join NATO either. It would be a disaster for CEE relations with west, if someone from there told us “Sorry, no place for you, Russia told us you can’t join”.
