Kuleba – I call on the German government not to repeat the mistakes made by Chancellor Merkel in 2008, who spoke out clearly against Ukraine’s integration into NATO

  1. US: “Ukraine cannot join NATO right now.” (Implicitely, because it’s at war.)

    Reaction: *Crickets*

Reaction: * Everyone freaking out *

  2. Russian appeasement will never work. Churchill > Chamberlain

  3. Oh, wait 10 minutes, there would be a ton of comments that Merkel did everything right and that’s Ukraine who didn’t want to join.

  4. This is one decision that I think the timing of is hypothetically really important. Politically I think it needs to be absolutely clear that once Ukraine are in NATO, any attacks by Russia will trigger article 5. If Ukraine were to join while Russia were still on their territory the worry is that Russian attacks will continue frequently enough that NATO won’t ever be able to draw a line in the sand.

  5. Nothing will be gained by creating the narrative that Germany will be the culprit of Ukraine not being admitted into NATO tomorrow. And nothing will be gained from rewriting the history of the 2008 NATO summit. Kuleba creates unrealistic expectations and thus an unnecessarily uneasy atmosphere.

Ukraine won’t join NATO for the duration of the war. That’s not just the stance of Germany, but also of various other NATO members including the United States. Kuleba should be honest and not just focus on Germany.

Considering the generally tense political situation in Germany he should be grateful that Germany remains faithful with its commitments even though the enemies of Ukraine and the servants of Putin gain traction. Scholz isn’t politicising the assistance to Ukraine because poll numbers look grim. Kuleba should honour this commitment and not overplay his position.

  6. In 2008, Philip Lahm also made a mistake by letting Fernando Torres score the winning 1-0 at Euro2008. Im still furious about that and Merkel probably too.

  7. Merkel was or is putins spy…..she did everything for the cheap gas. She ruined the army…she closed the nuclear plants….she is a good lady

  8. What a bunch of nonsense. As long as orban and erdogan are in power there will be no membership for ukraine. They cant even ger sweden into nato..

  9. Is kuleba off of his meds again? He seems to repeat this every so often. Or it could just be clickbait news agencies repeating it over and over, I can’t tell anymore.

  10. German here. I fully approve Ukraine joining NATO and EU

  11. Oh great, are we back at shaming Germany again? Guess it’s the common scapegoat these days.

I’m actually getting really tired of this narrative – and it really doesn’t shine a good light on Ukraine and it’s officials that pressuring and bullying is the way to communicate with an ally.
