  1. Deputy Pentagon Press Secretary Sabrina Singh, in answer to questions from a WaPo correspondent:^1

    >[On] the cluster munitions, for operational security reasons — and — and Dr. Kahl did, a little bit, get into this — I’m just not going to get into a timeline of delivery, of when they will be expected in Ukraine.

    >What I can say is that, with the announcement of the package last week, we are flowing equipment and systems into Ukraine almost within — from one to two days of a package being announced.

    >So we are — we are making sure that the DPICMs arrive at a time when they are most needed in the counter-offensive. That is exactly why we announced it when we — when we did last week.

  2. So in other words the big 9 offensive brigades have them right now.

  3. Are they a wizard? They’re never late. They’re never early. They arrive precisely when they need to?

  4. The next 2-3 weeks should be really spicy on the front.

I’m guessing we are going to be supplying these at a rate of about 15k/day (based on the claimed “hundreds of thousands of rounds” meaning atleast 200k, and packages being roughly 14 days apart”.

  5. A clusterbomb is never late, nor is it early. It arrives precisely when it means to

  6. The issue is that cluster bombs can also inflict damage on friendlies on the push because of unexploded canisters.

  7. They are probably extremely deadly against targets that have to be exposed like air defence, mortars, artillery etc.

Maybe they will be useful against trenches but they would probably be a large improvement for taking out indirect fire support and air defence.

Nato forces in my understanding stopped using them because friendlies and civilians have been killed by them. So I could see them not being used against entrenched enemies since that in my understanding will require a lot more firepower to clear which means more duds in the area. But against open forces counter attacking and against exposed soft vehicles I could see them multiplying the abilities of ukrains already formidable artillery.

That said, the russians seem to leave shit lying around like ammo/civilian vehicles. So hitting trenches may be effective in small amounts not so much to clear the trenches, but to fuck up their mounds of ammo, civilian vehicles, etc.

I.e. I don’t think they have the penetration for a fire mission on a trench if guys are taking cover. Probably would work to start a fire mission though if it catches russians out of their trenches.

Anyway I’m sure they’ll figure it out.

  8. I just hope Britain can find a loop hole way to give their cluster ammunition to Ukraine as well like selling it off to a third party and having them giving it to Ukraine. They are gonna need every firepower they got to unlodge those orcs.
