“Driver, help a child!”. 1970 photo taken by a roadside in Poland, during a hiking boom. Hiking was highly encouraged and popularized, with competitions, awards and millions of “Hiker Passports” issued to hikers and “Hikers’ Friend” IDs to helpful drivers. (No, nobody was killed, kidnapped etc.)

  1. I like every time it is necessary to specify people didnt get killed for trusting strangers… Most of the world these things are a non-issue

  2. You mean hitch hiking? Because you don’t need a driver to hike.

  3. How do u know nobody

Hitch-hiking is the word for taking a ride from a stranger ‘autostop’ in polish)

  4. Hello I’m going to the Baltic sea. Yes why are you asking me about the wetsuit, it’s definitely not for crossing the Narva to go into the USSR.

  5. Was a “Hikers Passport” similar to a Pilgrims Passport?

  6. “Nobody was killed, kidnapped” – source: I made it the fuck up

  7. >(No, nobody was killed, kidnapped etc.)

    …that we know of

  8. Hitchiking is really cool. I used to do it every week coming back from uni 10 years ago. Now that i have a car im too lazy to do it but i pick up other people.

  9. I was hitchhiking, when I had to fetch my shopping from a shop in the heat miles away. I kept saying I would not, but I would because I could not care less on my way back. I never stopped people, they just saw me and offered. One day a man who picked me up (we spoke different languages), kept signalling for me to “offer services with my mouth”. I pretended not to understand, then pretended that I saw somebody I knew outside in the middle of nowhere and got the hell out. I never accepted help again. Thanks to God, I now found a way to get groceries delivered.

  10. Fun fact: The miniskirt was invented by communists to safe on textiles.
