  1. Short summary:

Turkey should be under no illusion that it might one day be allowed to join the European Union, the Kremlin said on Tuesday, as Moscow stressed its desire for strong relations with Ankara despite disagreements, including over NATO enlargement

Russia sees NATO expansion as a threat to its own security, but Peskov played down a reporter’s suggestion that Turkey was pivoting away from Russia and towards the West.

“Turkey can orient itself to the West, we know that in the history of the Republic of Turkey there were periods of intensive orientation to the West, there were periods of less intensive ones,” he told a daily news briefing.

    ‘ROSE-TINTED SPECTACLES’
“But we also know that… no one wants to see Turkey in Europe, I mean the Europeans. And here our Turkish partners should not wear rose-tinted spectacles either,” he said.

  2. Like so many other things, this is not something Russia decides or is allowed to dictate.

Even if they are predicting the likely outcome.

  3. That’s definitely not true, although Turkey being as inconsistent and unpredictable in its foreign policy certainly doesn’t give anyone confidence in what could be expected from them if they joined the EU.

  4. Turkey will never enter while this clown rules the country, his economy is in deep shit and he wants to smear it all over us.

  5. This is hilarious

Like admonitions from Adolf Hitler about the aggressive nature and brutality of the Franco regime in Spain

  6. I am pretty sure there will be no Europe in 20 years, they are aging and becoming more conservative, and they become irrelevant in the grand scheme of things.

  7. Turkey will be able to join EU when they live up to the rules they are expected to follow as a member.

Same as last week, month, year and the same as next week, month, year.

Nothing new and Erdogan most likely used this as his “out” when the heat became to much and nothing could be gained by continuing.

  8. Hell must be freezing over because I agree with the Kremlin.

  9. For once Kremlin is right. Turkey doesnt belong in europe and definetly not EU.

  10. They aren’t taking notes from Hungary are they?

  11. Well this is true. Why would EU let us in while

1)having millions of unregistered refugees/immigrants.Once high-ranked ISIS member was found in Istanbul.

    2) a country no longer a democracy with shitty economy.

    3) Unresolved Cyprus issue….

4)With Turkish accession there will be no country be between EU and Middle East.

I have seen some US statements supporting Turkey’s EU accession but they won’t be bothered with it’s consequences. Also maybe they think EU membership will make Turkey closer to West.

  12. He’s probably right tbh. Admitting Turkey to the EU would mean a perpetual steady-stream of Muslim migrants into the EU and that would be destabilizing.

  13. Best case for both parties is giving Turkey a similar status as Switzerland/Norway. Turkey is too big to join the EU. On the other hand, Turks are way too independent & nationalistic (with or without Erdogan, doesn’t matter) to implement what Brussels dictate them.

  14. This is one of the few correct things the Kremlin has said, the EU is now unlikely to accept a country worse than Orbán’s Hungary to join in and destroy a union that is increasingly falling apart, Russia should just lament Its cost of silence in Turkey over the past few decades

  15. Since when the troll-farm is in charge of the official Kremlin communications?

    Never mind.

  16. I hope to one day see Turkey move towards and meet the conditions to join. We’re better as friends.
