NATO summit adopts decision concerning Ukraine: package of three elements

  1. Not as good as I wanted, but better results than I had feared. Neither best case nor worst case, and at least a clear acknowledgement of Ukraine’s accession to NATO.

  2. Quote: “The third element – we have confirmed that Ukraine will become a member of NATO, and agreed to waive the Membership Action Plan. This will make Ukraine’s accession a one-step process instead of a two-step one. We have also made it that we will announce about the invitation of Ukraine to NATO, when the allies agree, and the conditions are fulfilled.”

NATO membership is not if… it is when. But as the war may continue for years, I don’t expect anything this year. We all need to be a bit patient. This war is a marathon and not a sprint.

  3. Obviously it would be better from the Ukrainian perspective if Ukraine were to join right now, but everyone knew from the start that wasn’t even on the table as a possibility. It would commit NATO to war, which they have no appetite for.

Given that situation … the proposal is about as good as could be. Though the devil will be in the details.

Everyone is going to focus on the third element, but the other two are of more immediate importance. Greater coordination between Ukraine and NATO is all to Ukraine’s benefit.

  4. So instead of the MAP we now have NOPE. There is no plan, no criteria and no timeline now. Imagine that you need to apply for visa somewhere, and instead of big list of requirements, they now tell you “good news, remember that list? it doesn’t apply to you now. we will simply observe you and contact when we decide you to be worthy of a visa.”. Such a great and simple solution, isn’t it?:)

  5. I struggle to believe that we know everything happening on the backstage. I mean some things are better to keep private.

  6. And to think Putin complained about NATO expansion as a reason to invade. Now Finland and Sweden are in, to be followed by Ukraine. What a strategic genius.

  7. Fucking pathetic. “when the allies agree, and the conditions are fulfilled”. Meaning, possibly never. All it takes is one orban (for example) and Ukraine won’t be a member any time soon. What a big step forward, nato. What a brave decision. Wow.
Basically also gave control to Ukraine’s membership to russia.

  8. This is great news! Essentially once war is done, Ukraine can join. No long process!

  9. Sounds pretty good to me, kinda the most you can expect from this.

  10. 15 years past and nothing changed. No, Kaja Kallas, this “nothing” was exactly what everyone expected and yet there was hope for better, in vain. But even more, West already talks about “negotiating” part of Ukraine to Putin.

Could NATO invite Ukraine now? Yes, as there was precedent with Cyprus. Could NATO interfere into ruzian invasion? Yes, as there was precedent with Yugoslavia. Could NATO initiate Article 5? Yes, as there were nuclear-capable missile strikes on Poland.

But, nothing of it, not even concrete invitation for Ukraine.

    Пидорасы…

  11. I think NATO could probably send troops at this point and Russia wouldn’t do jack shit. We should do it.

  12. I’m genuinely curious what stepwise roadmap some of the people in here were expecting.

To me, this reads that they aren’t completely opposed to bringing Ukraine in at any time, regardless of current policy but the war is ongoing with no sign of stopping and they have not agreed when to step in and draw the line in the sand.

The silver lining is the alignment on membership which means, at least, they can work toward something.

  13. To my understanding, this Ukraine-NATO council has been put into place to continue building Ukraine towards “NATOfication” without making it directly tied to their NATO application. It will allow them to continue the necessary changes and possibly streamline further aide. In the meantime, the only things that Ukraine still needs are ratification from all NATO members (looking at you, Turkey) and the war to end.

Overall, this sounds like incredible news for NATO and Ukraine!

  14. Sounds great. Essentially a NATO member pretty soon after the war is over.

Oh and fuck putin, the tiny-peckered pedo

  15. Time. Ukraine also suffers human losses (which are not customary to talk about). By the end of the war, it may turn out that only the territory of Ukraine will enter NATO. Without people.

    And time works for Russia.

  16. At the very least I think this shows they’re serious about letting Ukraine in

  17. I’d like to see NATO put peace keeping groups in areas away from the front line. That could free up Ukrainian soldiers to head to the front. Anybody think this could be a possibility?

  18. This is better than I expected.

Now we know it’s just a matter of time

  19. Let’s hope that this won’t be like a job interview lasting for years without responses. But we can all foresee that Ukraine into NATO is imminent

  20. I’m gonna build my own NATO. With blackjack. And hookers!

  21. I don’t know why people are so negative. This is as good of a deal as Ukraine in the middle of a war will ever get. NATO wasn’t going to agree to go to war on Ukraine’s behalf right away.

They are transitioning Ukraine from Soviet to NATO weapons, which is alone a huge deal because it means direct support instead of having to come up with janky workarounds like how they got HARM missiles on MIGs.
