“Romania’s society reeled in horror after an investigation revealed that a well-established criminal network involving state officials and private individuals ran “Nazi camps-style” care centres for disabled people who were left to starve without food or care.
Prosecutors discovered appalling conditions in three care centres near Bucharest, where nearly 100 elderlies faced starvation, torture, and exploitation.
…
But the involvement of politicians in the scandal has also created headaches for the coalition government led by socialist Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu.
Romanian media reported that the centres were run by an adviser to the socialist Minister of Family, Gabriela Firea, who has held her post since 2021.
Moreover, two of the three private care centres are reportedly in the city whose mayor is Firea’s husband, while her sister ran the Directorate of Social Assistance, providing certificates for the disabled.
Firea reacted by saying the scandal was an attempt to “intimidate” her, ruin her image, and remove her from the race to become the Romanian socialists’ leader.
Prime Minister Ciolacu vowed to show “no mercy” to those responsible and “to cut into living flesh” to resolve the scandal.
President Klaus Iohannis […] described the situation as a national disgrace.”
Wasn’t there a documentary exposing that like 20 years ago
