President Recep Tayyip Erdogan’s suggestion that he might lift his veto on Sweden’s accession to the North Atlantic Treaty Organization in exchange for Turkey’s admission to the European Union was the baldest blackmail — it deserved no consideration, never mind consent. Even though a breakthrough on Sweden seems to have been achieved, Erdogan’s EU proposition should be taken by the US and its European allies as further proof that Turkey’s president is not a reliable ally within multilateral organizations.
“let me blackmail my way into an economic bloc while denying access to a defensive alliance while there is a war in the continent. it cannot backfire” <—- Clueless
that was either a 1000IQ move or the dumbest move possible
It was already ruined!
Not blaming EU for not accepting Turkey at all, but to be honest, he did what’s asked in early and mid 2000’s and back then, Turkey was a way different country overall, they still just postponed and forestalled the process. Seriously, Romania is better than what Turkey was in 2010?
Again, not blaming anyone, but overall, only thing he has an overall point was that EU countries are as insincere and dishonest as him.
Erdoğan probably sees his Jack Sparrowlike unreliability excused by almost every action by others he sees as wrongdoing.
Yeah that is obvious. A guy who is obviously so willing to use blackmail to get his will does not understand how the EU works. We already have such counries with Poland and Hungary, Turkey would fit right to them. Really no need for more of this shit.
I’m surprised he folded so quickly.. Like he makes his demand in the morning and does a complete 180 on the same day, in the evening. I thought he would actually draw this out a couple of months, like he did with Norway’s NATO membership.

He is a murderer and that self-coup was a scam with dozens of bodies scattered on the street to justify him earning even more power. The EU doesn’t need even more reasons for their opposition to call them an dictatorship.
Turkeys bid was ruined in 1299 if we are being honest.
Even if Turkey suddenly became a paragon of European values it wouldn’t happen any time soon.
In what universe will Greece or Cyprus ever consent to them joining the EU.
Plus the elephant in the room is a bunch of EU states will flat out oppose it because it would piss off their anti immigration base, not to mention the religious factor amplifying that, especially so considering its Erdogen’s voter base.
Backing Turkeys membership would be political suicide in most states, hell fear mongering about it was a pretty damn big (completely bs) part of the brexit campaign.
Oh no! The thing that was never going to happen will now never happen!
So either author just needed to write something or he is clueless, as the idea that this behaviour would have any impact of Turkey’s potential accession to the EU is ridiculous.
While I still think it is likely to happen eventually, (potentially but not necessarily in my lifetime) it clearly is not happening any time in the foreseeable future and certainly not going anywhere as long as Erdogan has any power. And anybody who has any understanding of the EU would know this, so I really wonder the point of an article with this title. (Though I didn’t actually read because I won’t pay for that)
Accepting muslim countries in the EU, especially that large is geopolitical suicide .
Does Erdogan even want to join the EU?
I think he just wants to be able to tell Turkish people “I would join the EU tomorrow but they won’t let us because they are anti-Turkish”
Which in fairness is a similar policy to lot of EU leaders who like to blame the EU for their problems instead of accepting responsibility. Looking at you Brexiteers, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Poland
