Two iconic Transylvanian spreads: Grilled eggplant with onion (vineta) and cooked paprika, tomato, onion and beans (zakuszka), also some cured pig fat (szalonna)

  1. I have not had Zakuszka in maybe 15 years. Thanks for reminding me!

I remember one time we had to bring a dish to our global cultural studies class in high school for a country we were each assigned. I brought store-bought Zakuszka to share with the class!

Side note: I spent some time in Transylvania in the heart of the Carpathian mountains in the late 90s through family and stayed in a country village called “Nucet”. We heated our bath with firewood and ate multi-course meals almost nightly! It was a fantastic experience!
