
As a visitor to the Vestmann Islands, an older man pointed to this sign and I wasn’t sure if it was disrespectful to visit the cemetery? I can’t translate this easily.

As a visitor to the Vestmann Islands, an older man pointed to this sign and I wasn’t sure if it was disrespectful to visit the cemetery? I can’t translate this easily.

The sign says: “Peace be with you”.
“Peace be with you”
Simply strolling through a cemetery won’t be seen as disrespectful, no.
“Friður sé með yður.” It’s an old fashioned polite way to say “peace be with you”. “Yður” is kind of like “thee” in English.
So long as you aren’t doing anything inappropriate I don’t think people would mind you visiting the cemetary. Just be mindful of others and you should be fine.
