Hi! I’m traveling through beautiful Slovenia at the moment, but don’t speak Slovenian.
I bought this in Lidl today because I thought it looked interesting! But I’ve no idea what it is and Google translate isn’t helping!
What is it? Do I cook it? How do I eat it?
Hvala!

Everything at once, but meat.
Slice it raw. Eat with bread, sliced onion. Salt.
This is basically the same thing though the ingredienzs and quality of the varies.

You eat it by throwing it into the trash.
Hah, just kidding, but yeah it’s pretty gross and I’m far from a picky eater. It’s eaten mostly by older generations beacuse when they were young everything was used from an animal as meat was very expensive and if you had a farm you sold the meat and ate the rest except for some holidays.
Okay so what is Tlačenka made of? It’s pig fat and skin along with some residual meat cooked for a lot of time. Usually you cook whole head along with it. The fat creates the gelatine which looks almost translucent. You also have “crunchy” versions where pig ears are added in and some people prefer it that way (including my father). Might be made different at the plant, but that’s how it’s made at home. Usually it’s served with a lot of onions, probably to mask the awful flavor and stench haha. If you like unusual stuff try ‘Krvavica’/blood sausage as well. That one is much better though. Bon appétit.
Is that a tea spoon in the picture?
Anyway, you don’t eat that with a tea spoon. 😀
Okay…so I had some of it with bread and butter now as recommended….there were some weird crunchy bits!
I’ve liked everything about Slovenia so far…..but I don’t think I’ll be buying this again! Ha!!
Tastes so bland lol ewww
