  3. Well, Russia cant afford to piss off Turkey anyway, they have a huge fleet, control the Hormus strait and can seriously limit Russias Marine, they have a pretty good position on the worldmap to be a serious player.

    Also they know that the Turks act, as they downed one of the russian planes when it violated their airspace and didnt react to warnings.

    Realpolitik says he did it because he can. And Russia can’t do anything about it.

  5. Well, he handed them over, because his despicable policy of pleasing Russia only makes sense, when Russia is winning. Now that they are obviously done and only playing for time and to increase costs of throwing them out, Erdogan is suddenly interested in EU membership and being in NATO.

    Am I to extrapolate that Erdogan’s logic was that the decision was reached between Ukraine and Russia to have the Azov commanders sent to Turkiye, and that when Zelenskyy asked for them, it was Ukraine and Ukraine only breaking the agreement? Therefore he’s not at fault?

    It went like this:

    Russia: For some reason we are having a momentary instance of clarity and we realize that these prisoners are not going to survive in Russian captivity, and that that is actually really bad for us as a modern nation who wishes to be taken in any way seriously.

    Ukraine: Leaving aside the question of why you all can’t think like this all the time, and therefore realize you should never have invaded… let’s talk about our people that you have captive. If you can’t guarantee their safety as prisoners of war you have to give them to us.

    Russia: Pff no way, we will only give them to a neutral third party.

    Ukraine: Come on, who could that possibly be?

    Turkey: It’s me! I’m the neutral third party!

    Russia: Are you kidding, you’re NATO!

    Ukraine: Are you kidding, you’re constantly kissing Russia’s ass!

  12. It’s a power move that caused headlines but ultimately was a very very small gesture that cost him nothing and painted him in good light and goodwill. I don’t think that many people are scared of ru-ss-ias potential now they’ve run half of their army into the ground. Except their nukes ofc but that isn’t going to happen. And if it does, well it’s goodnight Russia

  13. An analysis I follow thinks that he handed them to also give Russia an excuse to break the grain export deal with Ukraine

  14. He did it because he has realised that Russia is going to lose, and he wants to be on the winning side. Just like Russia will lose it’s power across the board, Turkey will lose its bargaining leverage if he doesn’t have plausible deniability about his pro-Russia and pro-Putin activities.

    Not because he’s a decent man. He isn’t.

  15. Could someone explain what possible justification under international law would have allowed these soldiers to be held in Turkey against their will? I mean, Russia is more than welcome to bring as many Ukrainians to my own country as they want. But the shackles come off the moment they step on our soil.
