COVID-19: PM ‘reserves possibility’ of further restrictions and says govt is following the data ‘hour by hour’

  1. What the fuck were they doing before?

The Government shouldn’t be following data with the same frequency as I do in my IT job.

  2. He won’t lockdown because it means he’d have to rely on Labour votes for it to pass through parliament?

  3. We are going to have a longer lockdown after Christmas arent we?

This is exactly what happened last year. The Gov hesitated to put smaller restrictions in and we paid for it later.

  4. I have never agreed with much the government has done so far in its covid response, however given the current data and what we see from other countries (i.e south africa) i think for now this is still the right response and we can get through with no ‘disaster’. We need to keep boosting and go ham on the unvaccinated.

  5. 1. Covid is endemic and is never going away.
    2. Society cannot keep getting shut down every year.

Given these two completely obvious facts what possible justification is there for lockdown? I mean whats the plan lockdown 2083 where generations have grown up knowing they cannot leave the house in January?

  6. I feel like they’re waiting for all the “100,000 cases today!” headlines to hit (likely in the next couple of days) and then they’ll announce restrictions.

  7. Why do they say ‘there is already a package of measures in place for hospitality’, when that seems absolutely untrue? We have a small adventure/camping vehicle hire company (my wife and I, very small!), and will be cancelling bookings over the Christmas period with any new restrictions. There are exactly zero support measures in place for our business, best I can see.

Also part of the ‘Excluded’ last time round, fell through many gaps in support. Very difficult few years, with no new support in sight.

    Deep joy…

  8. If I had a 2 hour meeting at work and the end result to report was “Yeah no sorry mate no idea what the plan is yet, we’re gonna think about it though” I’d be fired on the fucking spot.

Like what’s the real reason there’s no answers here, they ran out of cheese and wine so they’re pencilling in a round 2 for tomorrow?

There is definitely going to be SOME SORT of restrictions, but by not setting out a roadmap today then whatever they do come up with in a few days time will be a complete surprise instead of something people can plan for. Queue up the panic buying and rampant misinformation again…

  9. They’re gonna wait until after Christmas day and then we’ll be locked down again.

**I don’t want another lockdown**, but this is putting the party before the people as usual. Typical Tories. All of the bad press recently has probably made them reluctant to put the brakes on.

  10. I would honestly have more respect for him if he just came out and said, “no restrictions, its in your hands” and left it at that. At least then he’s made some form of decision and told people whats going on.

  11. Ask yourself this question… if Boris addressed to the nation that you had to jump off a cliff… you clearly wouldn’t would you.

  12. And I reserve the right to have ‘Cheese and wine’ whenever I feel like it over Christmas. The situation is nowhere near as bad as last Christmas and they obviously weren’t very worried

  13. Just wish he’d honestly say its up to us now how we deal with it.We are mostly jabbed the anti vaxxers can take their own risk Omicron is milder than most strains those who want to stay in can.Im done I’m almost triple vaxxed had a mild case use lateral flows if I’m meeting older relatives or get cold symptoms.Ive got a month of in January I’m visiting my mums grave going to visit my sister and dad plus mother in law. Will mask up etc but won’t abide another lockdown enough is enough.

  14. I’m guessing lockdown announced on Boxing Day.

Christmas mixing isn’t so bad, but New Years mixing is usually much wider/massive parties

  15. Translation for those who don’t speak Tory; we are adding restrictions just after Christmas hoping you’ll all be too pissed up to care, like we were at our cheese and wine ‘meeting’.

  16. Let’s see.

Chris Whitty is visibly itching for a full lockdown effective immediately. Labour seem to quite want one as well.

Boris is still a populist who doesn’t want to be known as the grinch who stole Christmas twice.

So there will be a full lockdown announced on Boxing Day for the 27th or 28th I reckon.

  17. Just tell stop the dithering and either cancel Christmas or tell us no restrictions until 27th December!

People need to plan where they’re going to be, how much food to get in etc.

  18. The three previous lockdowns has shown us that it didn’t work. Otherwise we wouldn’t be here, where we are, now. Covid is here to stay, that’s a fact. There’s no way we’re going to eradicate it, at least not in the foreseeable future. So, until then, what do we do? Have a lockdown or two every year? Because lockdowns absolutely suck. They cause more long-term detrimental effects than the positive effects they may have in the short term. I told my counsellor and my own mother last year, that if this is how life is now, I don’t want to live it. Let me live my life how I want to live. I’m an adult and can risk assess my own actions. If I want to go out partying every week in a venue of 2,000, let me. If Beth down the road is a carer for her dear old grandmother Mary, then she probably shouldn’t party every week. Everyone needs to take into considerations their own circumstances and act accordingly. Just give us the ability to make our own choices. Fuck covid, fuck the restrictions and fuck the government.

  19. There cannot be another lockdown.

As time goes on, the effect on quality of life needs to be factored in more and more. It’s been 2 years, the cost benefit balance has shifted since early 2020.

  20. Hour by hour? They must be so stressed! Some cheese and wine should sort them right out. Can’t be having all these COVID meetings without it.

  21. I’ll be sticking to the mask wearing and doing lateral flows a while longer when mixing in person, and hoping to get my booster this week, but honestly, beyond that, I’m done, and don’t support further lockdowns.

  22. Translation: We’re going to lock down but we’re deliberately leaving it too late so you can make plans and then we can blame you for not following the new rules.

  23. Rumours from two people I know with separate govt connections that they are planning for new restrictions from 27th December.

Remember that previous lockdowns have always been proceeded by these sorts of stories on the Beeb.

  24. I’ll put money on the 27th.
Soooo if it’s that important to do it then it should be done immediately, and the only reason it isn’t is purely political
