I generally don’t like to generalize but I’ve got to say. I worked in a residential home specifically for “Afghaanse niet-begeleide minderjarige vluchtelingen”.
The idea was that “in this strange country where no one understands them (feelings, not language), at least they’ll have each other”
But when you put a bunch of unaccompanied youth from the same nationality together they start creating a ‘hyperculture’.
They believe they are acting true to their heritage and they have to protect their cultural identity. But the truth is that none of them have a clue about their culture or heritage because they’re children.
It creates an in- versus out-group where every form of critique on their behaviour immediately got shot down as racism. Out of the 18 youth that lived there, 4 weren’t criminals-in-training or showed signs of radicalization.
I had a colleague who was an Afghan refugee himself, but was already an adult when he fled to Europe. He used to say that if they acted like they did in Afghanistan, their best case scenario was getting beaten black and blue by their family. He also said that people had gotten lynched for less.
So yeah, best decision management ever made was split up the group and introduce different nationalities.
Sadly, that all came long after I left that job. At least I can confirm through empyrical date that almost getting stabbed over stupid shit like a tomato on a bi-weekly basis is not beneficial to your mental health.
Dat kinderen die hun hele leven thuis enkel oorlog kenden en daarna op zichzelf aangewezen waren om aan de andere kant van de wereld met die bagage een bestaan op te bouwen, vaak moeite hebben om in een vreedzame en gestructureerde samenleving te aarden, dat had ik zelf ook wel kunnen bedenken. Wat gaat Keulen doen behalve open deuren intrappen? edit ah oke, hij gaat pleiten om ze uit elkaar te halen.
Maar dat is eigen aan iedere generatie en in ieder land!

– Wij als Europeaan moeten behandel worden als goden
– Als Thailand Covid beperkingen invoert op toerisme, is dat enkel om ons te pesten.
– Alle Thais zijn corrupt
– Alle Thais zijn zo dom
– Thailand heeft ons nodig, of anders vallen ze terug naar de middeleeuwen.
