Minimum pricing for alcohol to come into effect in January

  1. Give people a break. Not the kind of thing we need in the middle of a pandemic and when restrictions are in force.

People are being squeezed of everything they have with nothing in return. Isn’t this going to drive up inflation even further?

  2. I really can’t believe there isn’t uproar over this.

All I can think is that there’s been so much shitty news people have tuned out and haven’t really grasped what this means or how soon it’ll be.

  3. I’ve been using the cheapest beer I could find for my slug traps. Now I think I may get a flamethrower against those bastards. It may be cheaper in the long run…

  4. Why is our country so dogshit when it comes to partying and having a nice time? If ya don’t like hurling this country offers nothing.

Earlier closing hours than all of Europe, most expensive drink.

  5. Once again the government looking after their mates in the Vinters Association, remember this was announced long before the pandemic and lockdowns. The whole basis for this is to stop people drinking at home and lure them back to the pins obviously what has happened since this idea was floated has changed things alot.

This will only hurt families of alcoholics the rest of us will pay the few extra quid or buy less to suit our budgets but for those who have a serious problem with drinking it will mean less money for food, less money for school supplies.

Gambling is a problem in this country too so would a 100 Euro minimum bet turn people with addictions off placing a bet or would it just punish those who like an occasional flutter ?

  6. So the big brands won’t increase their prices right? The minimum is below their standard prices so they won’t change right?

    Right?

  7. I used to make poitín for myself a while back.

Might light up the old pot still once the new year rolls around, could be a potential opening in the market.

  8. Who gets the extra money from this? It’s not a tax so does the extra €5 or whatever cost on a bottle of whiskey go straight to the retailer and distillers, etc.?

  9. Watch the already high use of drugs amongst the poorest (and the young) spike even higher

  10. Lol 40 quid for a slab of cans. Yeah, that will work when a bottle of hard spirit is cheaper. People will just switch to harder stuff. Well done.

  11. I’m going to do a big home brewing thread on this sub over the next couple of weeks once I have the energy to type it all up, might even do a couple of YouTube videos showing people just how easy it is.

Many people will be put off by the *seeming* expense and bulk of the equipment needed, but the worst kept secret in home brewing is that you can make your own absolutely delicious beers using the most basic ingredients and equipment (kits only, no need for the fancier stuff) if you buy your own hops separately and go against some of the instructions you’ll find in your average home brewing manual. I’ve been brewing since 2018, never bothered upgrading my equipment from the basic starter kit and other beginner stuff, and regularly make Citra IPAs and Chocolate Stouts which have genuinely caused me to more or less give up buying beer in the Offie, with the exception of treats where I want something fancy that would always have been above MUP anyway.

For around €20 worth of ingredients you can make a 40-pint batch of beer which is far, far, *far* tastier than anything you’re getting in the off license or supermarket for less than €2 a can or bottle. You just have to be willing to put aside a couple of hours once a fortnight for six weeks – and that six weeks can reduce to four if you’re not too pushed about tasting better than shite low-shelf beer 😂

I’d estimate a €100 initial investment for your first 40-pint batch (so €2.50 per can/bottle, which sounds like a lot) – BUT, thereafter, you can make each batch for €15. Price per bottle reduces exponentially over the first few months because of this.

  12. Who in the actual fuck wants this? Ireland is such a fucking nanny state, it’s bloody painful. January is going to be such a depressing month next year. Really hope somehow this thing gets killed.

  13. If the government made the lives of those on the bread line more tolerable maybe we wouldn’t be drinking so much. Cunts

  14. I’ve been making my own wine for awhile now, my father in law got me into it. I’ve also been meaning to start brewing my own beer too, I guess I’ll be figuring that out in the new year.

  15. Fuck me on top of everything else, headline yesterday about incoming increase in energy costs next year, January/February/March is going to be miserable. Priced out of our own house and back to the parents by the end of the year if they keep going at this rate.

  16. Won’t be long before the price of pints rise further to match. I bought a bottle of wine in Italy for €1.07 and a large bottle of Moretti for 50 cent two months ago. It’s like this government wants Ireland to be the most expensive place to live. They need to go ASAP.

  17. How did this get voted in? I’ve read no comments from people who think it is a good idea.

Tbh this would be a voting issue for me next time around. I’m not giving any support to anyone who supports this nonsense.
