I wonder what the definition of motorway is because it makes no sense that countries as big and populated as poland or Ukraine have so few
False for Poland. Map should include expressways which are build in better standard than lots of motorways in Europe
How has it been generated? I was genuinely surprised to see no motorways in Corsica, Sardinia or Moldova. The incomplete circular road around Moscow and the extra-broad Perekop isthmus (Between Crimea peninsula and the mainland) seem strange, too.
Thought there would be more motorways in the UK?
Now do it for roads that are at least 3 lanes wide
We don’t need them in Ukraine. We just care about our citizens too much. If we had mororway, our people would drive too fast, so there would be too many road accidents.
How do you define ‘motorway’ though? I know for a fact that some of the roads on the map (eg in Jutland, Denmark) are 2 lane highways, whereas only the major 3+ lane motorways are shown in the UK. If 2 lane ‘A roads’ were shown as well it would be significantly denser.
Also nicely can be seen the density of the coastline

I can count at least one thousand kilometers of dual carriageway motorways here in Sardinia (free toll state owned motorways different from private managed autostrade in mainland Italy) but according to this map they don’t exist. I’m also pretty sure some “motorways” shown in this map are insignificant two lanes roads classified as motorways in the countries where they are located.
Is motorway like Autobahn? Or what exact class of road is it?

It seems it is based on OSM data which is partially incorrectly classified.
E.g. here in Austria the Semmeringschnellstraße is classified as motorway, but Arlbergschnellstraße is classified as highway=trunk even though they are both exactly the same class of road.
