I’ve no problem with mandatory sentencing for attacking guards because I believe the type of person who would try to assault a guard armed with pepper spray and a baton would have no fear of demolishing a normal citizen.
In fact, I’d go so far as to construct an open type prison for short-timers who are currently in prison elsewhere, so that there’s plenty of space for people who’ve assaulted guards to do a good lengthy sentence.
In return though, the Gardai should bring in body cameras for all public facing members. They should also have to spend two weeks a year in Templemore having deescalation training to ensure they’re not instigating offences.
But its the scrotes under age that are attacking them that just get away with it. The gangs of them running amuck in town and in Ballyer (which currently is going mad with robbed cars)
There is no deterent for these assholes.
Yeah definitely should be mandatory sentencing for anyone assaulting a Gard. Always felt that on the other side of the coin there should also be mandatory sentencing for any Gard breaking the law.
No mandatory sentencing it is a absolute awful legal practice
Since I have zero faith in the Gardaí, both in terms of competence or integrity, I therefore have no faith in the validity of these supposed charges. How many of these suspects were in handcuffs and being bounced against every hard surface in the vicinity?
They have made zero effort to improve their image with the public, yet I’m meant to be happy with someone being able to get a person mandatory prison time based on their word, when that word has proved time and time again to be worthless. Frankly, until every single one of them is wearing a bodycam, I don’t understand why we’re expected to believe anything that comes out of their mouths.
I don’t think prison is the answer or deterrent to violent criminal behaviour as it does nothing to rehabilitate or repay society for unsocial aggressive behaviour. 2 years minimum, national service in a boot camp/army environment might be a solution
