  1. We got 60k last year. It is not which kills more but it is about the rapid CHANGE in mortalities.

  2. While it makes perfect sense that -40C in the winter can kill people, we don’t really expect people to die of heat in Europe.

Also, the question is how this statistics will look in some years, if this keeps up, and gets even worse.

  3. I UK we have a can’t cool the house in summer and can’t afford to heat it in winter scenario. Our figures are going to go up. Fortunately we’ve not had extreme heat…yet.

  4. sorry, but what? they have 43 to 48k excess cold deaths for the UK, more than 2x as much as for Germany. that can’t be real

  5. Congrats on making the most stupidly pedantic post on Reddit today.

  6. People that get stuck outdoors over a night due accidents or whatever very rarely die because of thirst or starvation – the cold kills so much faster. Doesn’t even have to be freezing temperatures if the person is wet.

The difference is that heat has to be rather extreme to kill.

  7. Yeah, but mostly poor homeless people die due to cold weather, so no need to pay attention.

  8. Thats a bad comparison. From a very questionable twitter source, known for bad science.

    >he was formally accused of scientific misconduct over the book; the Danish Committees on Scientific Dishonesty concluded in an evaluation of the book that “one couldn’t prove that Lomborg had deliberately been scientifically dishonest, although he had broken the rules of scientific practice in that he interpreted results beyond the conclusions of the authors he cited.”[8]

Also, Indoors, most people have a heating in Europe, few have AC. Outdoors, you can dress to mitigate most cold weather, you cant wear less than noting to deal with extreme heat.

These are not the same. At all. Also, the impication that there iis a competiotn, i.e. there are either more cold or more heat deaths is questionble. We will still get cold winters, regardless of more extreme heat events in the summer.

    EDIT:

Here is the actual study, for anyone who is interested. N.B. some of the data is 23 year old at this point.

  9. Yeah, but in Belgium most of these cold death are the homeless, so they don’t count.
