  1. Only 58%.

102 years after partition, some people still look east to a system which decides its leaders through the brilliant method of ‘first person out of a specific vagina’.

  2. I got 20% for the same question in my polling. My dog was undecided. 🤷

  3. Are we gonna have to build bonfires and burn our own flag then

  4. On the negative side: it’s a divisive, triumphalist, xenophobic display.

On the positive side: it’d be another bank holiday.

No contest. I’ll go grab the kerosene.

  5. Who turns down a free holiday?!! 🙄

I don’t care what it originally marked, just give me the day off!

  6. Based on 950 votes in a publication predominantly visited by people in NI.

Seems perfectly sensible to draw conclusions from it so.

  7. I mean, given all the reports and whatnot that tends to come out about what goes down on that particular day every year… I can see why people don’t want the south to associate with it.

  8. An extra day off wouldn’t go astray but what would we be celebrating in the republic here? I think we should have an independence day.

  9. It would be great to take the holiday and just hijack it completely.
    Here’s a few to get started –
    National dinosaur appreciation day.
Move pride day to July 12th
    St Patrick’s something or other

Surely there’s some more creative suggestions to rile them up

  10. Population don’t want celebration of their own inferiority and a memento of their suppression shock

  11. That’s fair enough in the current situation. Post unity that wouldn’t be acceptable, IMO. Until then, there doesn’t need to be a decision on it.

  12. Isn’t Belfast Live a Northern Ireland publication?

I’d be fine with a bank holiday in July instead of the 12th.

  13. It would make sense for us to actually celebrate our independence and have a holiday for that, rather than the 12th.

  14. The parades would be grand. We could all just go and mock them. It could be like the shame scene from GOT. Let them have their silly little game of dress up while they get pelted by rotten fruit. The bonfires would be a tricky one to deal with tho

  15. Online poll is worthless. I would like to see a properly conducted poll ask this question, and a for/against unification question in tandem. I think it would be quite revealing.

  16. If we have a 12th we should have another day in balance on Easter Monday called “Patriots Day”. That would rile them up. The Oranges have their own day. We have Paddy’s day. Just leave it at that.
