Ireland has most progressive taxation in OECD

Of interest since last year top 5 per cent now 125k plus when it was 100k and top 1 per cent over 250k when it used to be around 200k

  1. This thread will probably get downvoted to hell in this sub . I’ve talked about it a few times before but some people just don’t like these facts for some reason.

They like to think it’s the middle and lower earners getting shafted. With the higher earners dodging tax and making friends with the government. When they find out that the top earners in the country are actually carrying the substantial majority of all taxes paid, some people get a bit pissy.

Completely agree though. Irish system most definitely is more “fair” than most others globally.

It could probably do with a few more nuanced tax bands in the middle though. Functionally they won’t do much, but some people would feel better about it.

  2. Interestingly that top 10% of earners, who currently pay 60% of the country’s income tax, are the people SF believe are not paying their fair share and who should be paying more.

  3. Seems odd to leave out the 5% between top 20 and bottom 75. Top 25% tax contribution would be 83%.

  4. So people on €92k up contribute most with tax. I really don’t see the issue here, I really don’t see why this would stop an extra super tax coming in for ultra wealthy people.

  5. What does “most progressive” mean though?

Because it’s simply become a punitive taxation system for middle earners long workers.
