Blocking all new North Sea oil and gas projects is ‘absurd’ and puts UK at ‘behest of Putin’ says Energy Secretary

  1. The party that took money from russia, and then put lebedev in the House of Lords suddenly doesn’t like russia.

    It’s hard to keep up.

  2. If the UK government had invested in renewable energy years ago, the UK would be much less dependent on anybody and without pumping CO2 into the atmosphere.
They need to have a look a Wales, which not only generates twice as much electrcity as it consumes but in 2019, 27% was renewables with a target of 70% by 2030. Most of the electricity generated in Wales is exported to … England …

And the problem of no wind, no tides and no solar is, in principle, easily dealt with by various storage technologies, of which there are many, not just batteries.

  3. >Continuing, he said: “Unless the Labour party and Keir Starmer are going to tell people to switch off their gas boilers and immediately stop driving petrol cars, they’re going to have to import oil and gas and that’s going to put us at the behest of people like Putin.

    >”And worse still, with twice the level of CO2 on that importation”.

I’m as anti-Tory as the next guy, but what is the actual counter-argument to this?

  4. I want us to transition away from gas and other fossil fuels as quickly as is reasonably practical, but you can’t just stop using it immediately, it takes time to ramp up the new, cleaner energy sources and switch away from gas boilers, petrol cars and the like.

If we stop issuing new oil and gas licences in the North Sea we’re going to have to import more oil and gas from abroad at some point while we make the transition. Why is that somehow better than exploiting our own resources? It’ll likely be less green than using North Sea reserves.

The presence of North Sea reserves isn’t an excuse to avoid transitioning to cleaner energy by any means but while we do need oil and gas it’s better to use what we have rather than importing from elsewhere.

  5. Energy secretary spreads baseless nonsense.

It is mad how lies can be accepted so easily in our politics with no consequences.

  6. Yes dont worry about the world just think of money greed .

    Tis the Tory way .

  7. Umm, using oil and gas is what puts us at the ‘behest of Putin’, not stopping its use. His argument is like saying not eating chocolate puts us at the behest of Cadburys.

It’s worrying that the Energy Secretary knows so little about energy. Equally I have to laugh at the Tories downvoting this without the ability to contradict it.

  8. I wonder when a politician will have the honesty to just admit that there is no appetite to make the changes needed to allay man made climate change, and so instead set out a roadmap of preparing this country for dealing with the worst effects of it, which could be on us in less than 20 years (Grant Schapps will be in his 70s, I’ll be in my mid-late 50s, kids born recently will be in their late teens/early 20s).

What is our plan for dealing with increased global climate-related migration of people, climate refugees etc?

What is the plan to adapt infrastructure and society as a whole for more frequent heatwaves/droughts, increased flooding etc?

How are we going to prepare for global food shortages and increased prices?

What, if anything, is going to be done about extinction of species in this country (and around the world)? And what will the effects of those extinctions be on the environment as a whole?

Is the pretense of taking some slow action now going to leave us fucked in 20-30 years time? Old man Schapps will be in his 80s if he lives that long so it’s really not his problem.

  9. Token gestures in the UK won’t solve the global climate crisis.

  10. It was the privatisation of the energy sector that put the UK at the behest of russian gas.

Guess who pushed for the privatisation of the energy sector, ah yes, the tories.

    Funny that.

  11. Why do the tories say everything is helping Putin except for taking money from his cronies? It’s so patently absurd
