Maureen Lipman: Cancel culture could wipe out comedy

  1. Big words, Maureen, for someone vocally in favour of cancelling Jeremy Corbyn for the crime of advocating Palestine’s right to exist.

  2. 75 year old woman is out of touch with modern audiences, therefore thinks she’s being “cancelled” lol.

    Proper boomer moment.

Edit: Hilarious automod kills your comment if you use the word OK and the word boomer, without any words in between.

  3. Cancel culture ruining comedy seems to only be brought up by two types of people. Those who are far right politicians trying to call themselves comedians for a veneer of respectability. Or those who stopped being funny 40 years ago, retired, and lost the skill. Cleese has been funny more recently but Palin has aged better.

  4. “A YouGov poll seen exclusively by the BBC found 57% of those asked said they censor themselves on issues including immigration and trans rights, particularly if their views are deemed at the less politically correct end of the spectrum’”

It’s not politically correct to defend trans rights and shout down racism, which is what usually stems from people being cancelled when they talk about immigration.

Trans people deserve to live in peace with respect, they’re not threats, they’re not sex offenders, they’re usually just vulnerable humans faced with stigma and abuse while battling their own crisis regarding their identity. Just let them be who they are, why should it bother anyone else.

And there’s nothing wrong with being against immigration etc, but there’s a difference between wanting to curb immigration because of economic or social reasons vs openly speaking hate about people based on where they’re from. How many people scream deport deport at Eastern European’s, Africans or Asians just because they don’t like them, then claim they’re not racist and get into a flap about it.

  5. >Take comedian Russell Kane, who knows a thing or two about cancellation. He presents Radio 4’s Evil Genius, which each week takes a different figure from history and decides, based on their actions, whether they should be saved or cancelled.

    >He told me it’s “complete nonsense” that comedians are sacrificing being funny because they don’t want to be cancelled.

    >”I don’t think anyone is saying you can’t be offended, nobody is saying that, what we’re saying is you can’t use hate speech that would prompt a gender-related crime, a sex-related crime or a race-related crime.”

    >”There’s been a massive, much needed shift in the conversation around gender, around men’s attitudes to women, around consent. Society has moved on.”

I don’t understand how they made an article out of this. Old woman who is not a comedian claims there is cancel culture in comedy. Very current comedian claims there isnt. Which one do we beleive?

  6. >The YouGov poll shared with the BBC suggests younger people are more confident their views won’t age than older respondents.

    >While nearly half (47%) of the oldest Britons expect future generations to take a dim view of some of their views, only one in three (36%) 18-24 year olds feel the same way.

Cancel culture is just the new catch-all term for older views going out of fashion. It happens every generation and the above part of the poll just highlights it. Old people can no longer be openly racist/sexist/transphobic without being called out for it.

  7. Who has been cancelled?

JK Rowling spreads transphobia but that hasn’t closed Harry Potter world or stopped people going to movies.

  8. This is eye rollingly stupid.

Not watching what you say before you say it is a sign of autism. Pretty severe autism if you’re never able to do it.

Not going on about how the Muslims are plotting to destroy us all at work isn’t cancel culture. Its common sense.

  9. Any comedian I see moaning about this stuff, I can’t help but feel like they’re just not good enough at their trade to stay relevant, they know that and this is how they show they are bitter about it. It’s pretty much just an excuse.

John Cleese is the prime example. Your comedy was just a bit stupid, that doesn’t strike a chord anymore, deal with it or shut up.

Also this article is just a bit weird. “People hold back their less PC views when posting online.” Or in other words “There are still some people out there that know being openly racist and any sort of unreasonable phobic isn’t a good view to come from, but recently other people who share these views are becoming more vocal so I’m tempted to post too, but I’m not that confident yet.”

And don’t give me “where are these people?”. The amount of jokes I seen about people in the channel just weeks ago was disgusting.

  10. The hell are these old farts talking about?

They want to be listened to without any critisism whatsoever. That’s not how things work anymore. Everyone has a voice.
