Starting next week, my girlfriend and I from the Netherlands want to do a 2.5-week road trip through Germany with the car and a small tent and then travel specifically through the south (area circled in red on the map).

What should we definitely not miss in this region? We are interested in history (from Charlemagne to the two world wars and the Cold War such as the Iron Curtain), but also a lot in nature, museums and technology. We are very curious what you’d recommend.

The only thing that’s fixed in our plans so far is the Moselle region, because as a child I often celebrated holidays there with my recently deceased father.

We are also looking for recommendations on (small) campsites etc. Last year we did a 4 week road trip through Scotland and really enjoyed wild camping there. We understand that this is unfortunately not possible in Germany. But we’d like to avoid mega campsites.

Tldr: what should we see and experience on our road trip in South-West / Southern Germany?

  1. Visit Freiburg, one of the most beautiful towns in germany.

  2. Consider Aachen(Charlemagne Ctr, cathedral-throne), Bastogne WWII, Trier, Dachau/Munich. Good travels!
