  1. Oh man, those cluster munitions are going to major damage. Russia is obsessed with holding towns and cities and since Bakhmut is their only real “victory” they are going to waste so much trying to hold onto it.

  2. Last we heard the Ruskis had something like 15,000 vatniks in there. What it takes to hold on. UAF must be sensing an advantage to keep pounding them here….

  3. Not according to the Ukraine Interactive Map, it isn’t. Russia holds more territory on the north side, and it looks even on the south side.

Unless this map is lagging behind reality . . . it’s not a good idea to exaggerate successes, as that exaggeration will just be used by vatniks.

  4. Major exaggeration, I’m afraid. Still not in control of Klishchiivka to the south or Yahidne to the north, though on the outskirts of both. A more sober assessment: holding the front and threatening the flanks.

A semi-circle does not equal semi-encircled. In my books, semi-encircled means encircled except for a gap small enough to force escaping troops to run a gauntlet of fire control. Not to downplay the achievements at Bakhmut. Russians, imagining a relentless advance all the way to Kramatorsk, instead lost the initiative and were driven back with large losses and only hold onto their current positions by throwing in endless reserves of men and equipment. Which they really need for the Zaporizhzhia front, and maybe that is what this is all about.

Nothing but respect for what the 3rd Assault Brigade (Azov) in particular has managed at Bakhmut.

  5. Good

But also, is “semi-encircled” an actual term used anywhere ? I thought that either you are encircled, or you are not encircled
