    Though from what I’ve understood he’s always been like this.

  2. Yep, he’s generally had views that were a bit on the bigoted side, which he managed to keep sort of hidden a bit, but in recent years especially, he really has degenerated into the angry old racist wondering why he can’t refer to foreigners by a derogatory name.

    Fawlty Towers was seen as a great comedy, but it really did run on 2 things.

    1. Cleese being shouty
    2. Cleese hating and mocking all foreigners in particular.

    It’s actually pretty disturbing to watch back when you realise just how xenophobic it is.

  3. John Cleese has always been a pretentious bigoted asshole in real life. His Basil Fawlty character is just an exaggerated version of himself.
