  1. In fairness there needs to be some compromise, kids getting a criminal conviction for cannabis is ridiculous and totally hamstrings them.

Then the points An Garda Siochana makes about if we decriminalise Cannabis, they hear from their Colleagues abroad it will be used in public places parks etc, he should sit in his local train station, bus stop or town park on any given day it’s everywhere.

He also mentions increased crime drug driving etc if they decriminalise Cannabis, but he’s saying it like it’s not already here.

There’s people who drink and drive and don’t care about the consequences, there will be people who smoke and drive and won’t care, the overwhelming majority will obey the law.

I’ll never use cannabis so I’ve no skin in the game but it really annoys me when I see a kid getting a criminal conviction for using a plant for recreational purposes. Plus we’re pissin away resources on this that so obviously could be used elsewhere

  2. Good speech and he makes some good points. The drug driving concern I understand. Personally I’m for legalising cannabis, even though I don’t smoke it anymore.

I remember when I was a teenager (15 onwards) it was so much easier to get weed than drink. We’d be outside off licences asking people which felt risky at that age. Whereas we could call someone and have grass dropped to us any time of day, and even without money by getting on tick. I feel like they’d have a better chance if harm reduction by legislating it. I think it’s farily obvious that drink comes with more health issues than weed anyways. Although there does seem to be more habitual weed smokers than drinkers.

I agree with him in terms of all the other drugs. Glad to see they’re not putting people in jail for possession, although I would have liked to hear some actual stats rather than anecdotal evidence. Health based approaches are well needed as I think it’s clear the war on drugs is unwinnable with just enforcement.

  3. The current system of testing for drug driving tests if you’ve cannabis in your system, rather than testing if you’re impaired. So of course the roadside testing figures are going to be skewed. To take alcohol as an example, imagine you went for a few pints on a Saturday evening, you’d expect to be fine to drive on the Monday, however you can get tested and done for drug driving under the current system
