Harry Miller: Legal victory after alleged ‘transphobic tweets’

  1. Whatever your view on hate speech laws, it’s interesting that the police have been happily arresting and fining people for offensive social media posts them for years, until one of their own got caught. Or maybe it’s the fact the target was one of currently socially acceptable targets that’s changed things.

  2. > In one tweet Mr Miller wrote: “I was assigned mammal at birth, but my orientation is fish. Don’t mis-species me.”

Absolutely charming fellow and quite mature with his rhetoric.

  3. >A hate incident is “any non-crime incident which is perceived, by the victim or any other person, to be motivated by a hostility or prejudice”, according to the College of Policing’s guidance on hate crimes.

That seems like a _very_ broad definition that is wide open for abuse, and would likely prevent any discussion about any slightly controversial topic.

“Any other person”… so literally anyone can report a ‘hate incident’ against anyone else, for any reason, and the accused has no recourse because all that matters is what’s perceived by the person reporting, not what actually happened? That’s insane.

  4. Good man.

For anyone who wants to know more about the police’s shady goings-on, [Fair Cop](https://www.faircop.org.uk/) was Mr Miller’s backer through this process, and they’re committed to ensuring a more open and transparent police force.

  5. Harry is an absolute legend. A crushing blow to those obnoxious science deniers. Freedom of speech is sacrosanct.

  6. Is there a list of the tweets in question? I know the article lists one of the many but it always annoys me how whenever someone’s racist/sexist/homophobic/transphobic comments they never actually tell us what the fuck they actually were, so I have no idea what to think of the situation
