The tower of the one-eyed pirate Nikolos Sassaris in Mezapos, Mane, Greece

  1. Nikolos Sassaris was one of the most famous Maniot pirates who acted during the 18th century. His nickname was the “one-eyed” because he lost his eye in a duel with a Turk in Andros. With Sassarians tower in Mezapos as his headquarters, he raised a black flag and with his ship, named “Zargana”, he looted Ottoman and European ships which he towed and took to Itilo to sell. His end came when he was towing a French ship and was attacked by two Turkish ships. Today his tower has unfortunately fallen and only its base survives. The tower’s cannons have also been sold long ago.
