Observation deck at Hambach open-pit coal mine in North Rhine–Westphalia, Germany

  1. As someone from the area we have multiple large strip mines here in the area. The one in the picture is the biggest one.
Coal has many problems and is quite disastrous to environment and people who lived there, however if you can forget that for a second they are very cool and stunning to see in person.

  2. What you don’t see is that every morning, just before sunrise, the locals get up there to claim their loungers with towels.

  3. While I wish them all closed especially those in my country it really is impressive view in a way what humans can achieve how far we gone from living in wooden cottages to razing mountains, creating artificial valleys and lakes. Now if we could use it to fix pollution.

  4. To be fair, all of this will probably be turned into a “Baggersee” (Artificial Lake) like the other former open pit mines.

So, the panorama in a couple of decades might actually warrant an observation deck.

  5. Afaik it’s the biggest hole humanity ever dug. It’s a depressing but spectacular sight.

Can’t wait to see what happens when it’s closed. It’s probably going to become a pretty sweet lake.

  6. I deadass thought this was some form of post-apocalyptic artwork of people enjoying the view of the nuclear wasteland at first.

  7. That’s grotesque, but I guess it’s good to get a sense of just how much poison we’re pumping into the air.

  8. Why would anyone want to watch that apocalyptic scene? Vast areas of green fields and forests laid to waste.

  9. If you are particularly interested in coal mining then you may be interested in listening to Every Valley by Public Service Broadcasting, which details the story of coal mining in south Wales sampling audio clips from the time.

  10. The RWE corporation put the observation deck, a restaurant and a small museum at the rim of the hole. They call it … Terra Nova … Terra NOVA. Quite grotesque if you think that half a dozent villages and a rather huge forest had to go in the last decades for this. I was standing many times at the Hambach hole and it is absolutely surreal.

  11. When you think of Germany, what great wonder of nature comes to your mind? Like, idk, I can’t think of a single one that a foreigner would know. I mean compared to places like Grand Canyon, hello?????? This is an excellent stratagem to rectify this. This will be a regional world wonder of nature of the likes of Grand Canyon or the Mstterhorn that will lead to a lot of ecotourism once construction has finished.

  12. I used to live right near the sister mine near Inden. Whatever else it is, it is definitely an awe-inspiring view on the edge of these things

  13. /u/ROFLcopterXDXDXD Have you considered entering a competition like the Sony World Photography Awards with this picture? The Dynamics of this picture are very special. This is a once in a lifetime shot.
