[She also tried to sue a whistleblower at the last university she left after a number of controversies, so that’s great.](https://www.independent.ie/irish-news/maynooth-university-staff-afraid-to-speak-out-on-governance-proposals-after-australian-whistleblower-targeted/a461007670.html)

She’s basically given herself unprecedented control for an Irish university to select candidates on the governing authority. This right before the new selection process begins for the authority, so she’s free to select whatever candidates she pleases with no input from academics or administrative staff.

This body is supposed to be the primary check on her policy making abilities for the university. So say if she wanted to…

– create shoddy new degree programs without proper accreditation from professional bodies as cynical cash grabs
– liquidate the university’s rare book collection
– build herself a presidential residence

this governing body would be the main obstacle to making controversial hypothetical decisions like that. The general secretary of IFUT has written to the university to ask them to reverse their decision and to Simon Harris asking him to intervene. Fingers crossed, this is a dangerous precedent to set.

  1. This sounds like something Harris himself would try if he knew he could get away with it.
