Hey,
I’m strongly considering visiting the tromsø area for winter camping and seeing the northern lights.

Chatgpt says, that it’s usual for january to have wind speeds of 24km/h and temperarure of -8 degrees celsius, should I prepare for alot worse or is that accurate more or less ?

I have marked an area which would seem cool for me to camp just by looking at map (not 100% sure tbh), probably try to find a frozen water source and use it to make roundtrips transporting my stuff on a pulk to some lower altitude forested area to have some protection against wind, must be away from houses or towns, atleast like 500m or I fear I’ll bother someone (is there such place in this area ?).

I have mentioned roundtrips on frozen water, and transporting my stuff, what do I mean and why this post. I know norway allows wild camping with limits, thing is, I wanna setup a heavy canvas tent 4x5m with a stove in it, fuel it with dead branches, and basically live there for a month or two, no mess left around, no noise or music, probably no fire apart from my stove in the tent, try to not bother anyone, and leave the place as if I wasn’t there once the snow traces dissapear.

It is probably illegal with the heavy 500kg setup I have to do it (this is why It will take me like 3 days to make camp the way I want (tent and stove could be on day1), all the stuff will be in the tent, no mess around), but I wanna do it, even though it’s not technically legal, asking if it will be tolerated basically, what’s your view. My main concerns is that I will bother someone and will get fined or something, is it something that would bother the locals you think ? Is it doable over there ? That’s the concern and reason for this post

Also if the weather by chatgpt is generally accurate ? I could probably handle some -20C dark days, but if it’s constantly -25C with some blizzards all the time even in the forests I may need to move elsewhere.

I say forested areas, I just mean to have a few trees around to help a little bit hopefully. And some hill next to me to make some wind protection.

Also, have you ever had sognificant issues driving over there by car ? 4×4, considering the snow

  1. This is not legal. You are allowed to pitch a tent for two days max. Besides, climate and nature is much rougher than most people imagine. Where are you from and how much experience do you have with winter in the Arctic?
