Vladimir Putin has shifted from autocracy to dictatorship

  1. “The increasing number of political prisoners—there are eight times as many as there were six years ago, according to Memorial—is not a return to Soviet form, as the high life which surrounds the repression bears witness. But the people of late-1930s Berlin would find the mixture of the two quite familiar.

Echoes of that era are also to be found in Russia’s official rhetoric of ressentiment and imperial nationalism. They can be recognised in media images of the male body beautiful, encouraging healthy living, and in laws against homosexual propaganda. They were voiced in a recent speech by Vladimir Putin, Russia’s president, extolling the country’s “spiritual values and historical traditions” and denouncing the decadence of Western liberalism. Mr Putin took the opportunity to praise Ivan Ilyin, a philosopher who in the 1920s embraced Italian fascism as a model for Russia.”

  2. This is a very strange and late article. Putin is past his dictatorial phase at this point. If you listen to Russian politologists (not the government ones, of course), it seems more like the chaotic increase in repression is caused by the degradation of Putin’s power: he is losing control over the security apparatus and he is isolated from everyone since the start of COVID. Even when Putin says that someone should be freed (like the rector of Shaninka, who is either his friend or a friend of his friends), they are not. Moreover, it seems that Putin himself is not interested in internal politics anymore, only in foreign adventures.

  3. Putin was full blown dictator by 2012. The constitutional changes to two six year terms and crackdown on lgbt and pussy riot cemented it.

The West however continued to appease him and hence why we are in this situation where Russia is once again blackmailing Europe + US over Ukraine. Only question is what will West grant him this time?

  4. personally, i’m not buying it. the amount of russia fearmongering done by the european union and the USA since 2016 has been deceitful, strategic and calculated. with the leaks that Julian Assange provided it’s clear for all to see that NATO and the US are just a bunch of scumbag war criminals. if I were Putin, i’d be building up in anticipation for an attack also. remember the EU and US built up forces on Russia’s doorstep first. it was us that heavily implied that we could obliterate them with nuclear weapons if we needed to. Putin and Russia have every right to defend themselves and built up troops in their own territory against European and US instigation of aggression.

  5. Shifted? Didn’t know anyone was under the impression that he wasn’t a dictator.
