It was 11pm. My family was coming back from a very long and tiring trip to a funeral. This was a very tiny train and these kids literally filled up the entire place, giving us no space to move at all, so no one could even leave this goddamn train. Had to sit there and listen to this nonsense for half an hour until the very last stop.

I’m not from Germany so I’m not entirely familiar with the culture. Is this kind of thing acceptable or even normal here? I’m gonna be very shocked if it is. I’ve lived in many countries and this is the first time I’ve experienced anything like this on a train. Sure I’ve seen people drinking and even smoking before on German trains, but not to this level. No one around spoke up against these kids (some of the other people who were sitting here even joined in in the singing and drinking!), so my family and I thought this was perhaps acceptable in this culture and just stayed quiet (add to that we don’t speak German & we’re people of color so we didn’t want anything to turn “racial” if you get my gist).

In any case, I don’t know what these kids were drinking or smoking, but seriously, fuck them all.

  1. It is football culture. As long as you don’t see certain symbols, even if you don’t understand german you will understand the slurs.

What I call team drinking, is widely accepted and has nothing to do with violence, women do it too. They team up and drink on the train.

  2. This is what a generation of teenagers growing up in the pandemic gives us. Seriously, they lack any sort of restraint.

    You’ve been lucky, then.

No, it’s not normally socially acceptable behaviour. But these people (and the people who joined in) were obviously a bit drunk and in high spirits, and couldn’t know you’d been to a funeral.

You could have spoken to them, and they would probably have quietened down initially; but in their state of excitement they would likely have soon forgotten themselves and started singing again.

I know it’s not pleasant, and it would have annoyed me, too. But realistically, there’s not a lot anyone could have done.
