Found this in an article for americans coming to norway and i thought there’s no way that’s true. Is it? My family kept saying you need to start all over in norway for your license

  1. Norwegian licenses are valid in USA and vice versa, but if you are gonna stay for a longer time than a touristy lenght of time, it may require you to get a local license instead. Usually that is just 1 for 1 swap, you use the one you have as documentation and get a norwegian one. The dmv or a traffic school might now better.

  2. If you stay longer than 3 months (living here) you need to exchange it, which isn’t exactly starting over. You’ll need to rent a car from a driving school and pass the practical driving exam in person. With the US license, you at least don’t need to retake a lot of the theory and coursework.

  3. See [this](https://www.vegvesen.no/en/driving-licences/driving-licence-holders/driving-licences-in-norway-and-abroad/exchanging-non-eueea-driving-licences/?lang=en).

In short, unless you have some limitations on your driving rights in the US you can exchange your license within a year by passing the practical driving test (please not that this is not necessarily easy). If you have limitations on your driving rights, wait longer than a year, or fail the practical test… you’re required to do a partial or full drivers education in Norway.
