Norwegian licenses are valid in USA and vice versa, but if you are gonna stay for a longer time than a touristy lenght of time, it may require you to get a local license instead. Usually that is just 1 for 1 swap, you use the one you have as documentation and get a norwegian one. The dmv or a traffic school might now better.

If you stay longer than 3 months (living here) you need to exchange it, which isn’t exactly starting over. You’ll need to rent a car from a driving school and pass the practical driving exam in person. With the US license, you at least don’t need to retake a lot of the theory and coursework.

In short, unless you have some limitations on your driving rights in the US you can exchange your license within a year by passing the practical driving test (please not that this is not necessarily easy). If you have limitations on your driving rights, wait longer than a year, or fail the practical test… you’re required to do a partial or full drivers education in Norway.
