Breaking news.
Inspectors from the UN’s atomic watchdog have found anti-personnel mines at the periphery of Ukraine’s Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant, which Russia’s forces have occupied since the early days of the war.
The International Atomic Energy Agency said in a statement that the mines were located in a buffer zone between the site’s internal and external perimeter barriers.
“Having such explosives on the site is inconsistent with the IAEA safety standards and nuclear security guidance and creates additional psychological pressure on plant staff,” said Rafael Grossi, the IAEA’s director-general.
The statement added that experts had carried out inspections at the plant “without seeing any heavy military equipment”.
