Polish president vetoes media bill that targeted US company

  1. Actually he made decision quite fast. He had time till mid January.

BTW, all analytics of /r/europe failed, everyone was commenting that he will sign it.

  2. If PiS started pissing off US interests, that would trully have been admiting to having a death wish.

PiS’s general chauvinism and aggression against everyone had the implication that ultimately it relied on the US for its support. It was the final life-line.

  3. Did he not already announce he will veto it after the U.S warned him about it a while back? I know that members of the U.S congress and senators wrote letters about it.

    Regardless

No suprise here, Poland can afford to piss of the EU but it can not the U.S. Especially if they want more U.S Troops and bases.

Also good for Poland, you can’t have a fair democracy by censoring media

Edit: Yep the letters by congress literally said “congress will be watching closely as the fate of the media law….. to ensure free, independent media as well as U.S investments in Poland are safeguarded”.

  4. Is he playing a benevolent actor together with his parliament, or he’s genuinely against it? Can there be, as the next step, an introduction of idea that: if parliament fails to be adequate to the point the president has to step in… *why not do it more often,* gradually increasing the role of the president, and diminishing the role of the controversial parliament?
