27 years ago, members of the GIA hijacked Air France Flight 8969 at Algiers airport (Algeria), executing 3 passengers in the process, with the goal of blowing up the plane over the Eiffel Tower in Paris. Pictured, the GIGN assault on December 26 once the plane reached Marseille.

  1. I find it awsome how one member almost fell and climbed back onto the door. I would probably shit myself if i was left hanging off an airplane.

  2. OT question. As a kid I’ve watched a French tv series about the GIGN or something similar. Somebody knows the name of the series?

  3. There’s a french film about this operation “L’assaut” (2010). Really interesting, sadly it seems to be french only (at least it what I saw on french Netflix)

  4. Also a bunch of GIA members fled to London and it took a long time for them to be extradited to either France or Algeria because their lawyers kept arguing their human rights would be violated 🙄

  5. I remember this one in the news. There were not as many hijackings in the nineties as there were in 70s and 80s. But this one is memorable because of that fearless assault by the French anti-terrorist unit.
